A weekly show for owners of small businessesJulie Stanford, our MD, presents a weekly radio show, Business as Usual, on RadioReverb 97.2FM and www.radioreverb.com.

Each week Julie is joined by different expert guests and the show is packed with candid discussion and practical ideas for busy business owners. As a business owner, you’ll be told that you need to have a vision, a mission and a strategy… but what are they, and exactly how do you develop them? This week’s experts talk about Thinking strategically.

Joining Julie again in this studio this week:

  • Phil Green is managing director of the MDHub as well as being MD of his own company, Prism Group. His last ‘real job’ was as MD of an inbound Japanese tour operator, based in Paris. Previously he has worked for McDonell Douglas Bank Group.
  • Joseph Clayton is the MD of Clayton Vyner Ltd. He has worked in America, all across Europe and the UK, and has 17 years’ experience in corporate development strategies. His company focuses on leadership and management development, employee engagement and communication.
  • Al Tredinnick is currently running his own sales and coaching business Al Tredinnick Consulting which has been up and running for six months and is thriving. Prior to this, Al was sales manager at Nido Marketing, and before that was a teacher of sales and leadership and a bank manager.

In life, we’re often inspired by leaders and kept on track by managers… but if you’re running a business, then you’ll need to be a bit of both. This week’s experts guests ask, Is there a difference between a leader and a manager?

Joining Julie this week are:

There’s a common misconception that your brand is simply your logo, but it’s so much more than that. Today’s expert guests talk about how to Build your brand.

Joining Julie in the studio again this week are:

  • Lorraine Bell is founder and director of Simply CSR as well as being vice chair of the Brighton and Hove Chamber of Commerce.  Before setting up Simply CSR, Lorraine co-founded an award winning PR and marketing social enterprise and a Community Interest Company.  She has also recently co-authored a CSR report for the Thailand Government and presented to over 200 businesses in Bangkok.
  • Ed Carr is Creative Director of Brand Group and has worked for brands ranging from global blue chips and large nationals to some of the most successful SMEs and entrepreneurs in the South East.  Behind all of Ed’s aware winning design is the understanding that he has the responsibilty to deliver to the bottom line.
  • Soraya Shaw of Springboard Coaching has enjoyed a successful career in advertising working at agenices such as Ogilvy and Mather working in client relationship and brand responsibility for multi-national companies such as Unilever, Kimberly Clarke and Johnson and Johnson to name a few.  She set up her management training and development company, Springboard Coaching six years ago.

Managing your management accounts (Series 4 – Show 2)

Many business owners don’t know how much profit or loss has been made until months after the end of the financial year and often, cash isn’t properly accounted for until there’s a crisis. In this week’s show we’re talking about Managing your management accounts.

Julie’s guests this week are:

  • Julia Chanteray is a regular guest on Business as Usual. She is the founder and owner of The Joy of Business and helps small businesses develop, using her years of experience running successful, profitable businesses. Julia was the ‘expert in residence’ on Channel 4’s Risking It All programme.
  • Paula Tomlison trained as a chartered accountant in the city of London and then went to work for KPMG, one of the largest accountancy firms in the country. She has recently set up On The Spot Tax, a service supporting small businesses across Sussex.
  • Paul Jordan is a member of the team at Sussex Innovation Centre. Paul is a ‘recycled bank manager’. He left banking in 2000 and since then has been involved in finding grants for entrepreneurs, undertaking research and development, or expansion. He works regularly for Business Link on their small business review products.
